CONFERENCE
|
| Organized around the theme BEGINNINGS,
the International Association for Philosophy and Literature is pleased to welcome you to
our 25th anniversary conference. Hosted by Spelman College, the oldest historically
Black women's college in the United States, a number of special events are planed to make
the conference an especially engaging and memorial occasion for all those participating in
the conference. We are particularly pleased to announce that bell hooks will serve as
Keynote Speaker on Friday afternoon and Paul
Patton has agreed to be this year's IAPL Invited Speaker on Wednesday
afternoon. On the evening of your arrival on Tuesday, May 1st, you are cordially invited to a Dionysian festivity and welcoming IAPL reception to be held in the Westin Peachtree Hotel (the conference hotel located in downtown Atlanta) -- the tallest hotel in the Western Hemisphere. Conference sessions and plenary events will run from Wednesday morning through late Saturday afternoon and will be held largely in the Cosby Academic Center on the Spelman College campus. In addition to regular conference sessions, there will be a special session followed by a special reception on Thursday afternoon celebrating IAPL at Twenty-Five. This session will look forward to the beginning of the next quarter century of IAPL conferences and events in the context of the past twenty-five years and will feature IAPL members who have been involved in the planning and organization of IAPL for many years. On Saturday afternoon, a plenary Round Table entitled "Rethinking Race and Gender in the United States" (organized by Roy Martinez) will feature Rebecca Chopp (Candler Professor of Theology, and Provost, Emory), Satya P. Mohanty (Professor of English, Cornell), bell hooks (feminist critic and writer), Leonard Harris (Professor of Philosophy, Purdue), Frank Kirkland (Professor of Philosophy, CUNY, Hunter College) and Evelyn Higginbotham (Professor of History, Harvard) as Respondent. For the final evening of the conference, Saturday, May 5th, we will host a 25th anniversary celebration dinner at THE MANSION, an extraordinary and exquisite Southern edifice and restaurant in downtown Atlanta. Tickets for the event are $44., and may be reserved now while making registration and dues payments, or at the registration table at the opening of the conference (seating is limited, so all dinner reservations must be made before Thursday morning). We invite you to attend this festive occasion with us. |
